National Press Release

UK Householders urged to "go the green mile" by warming to the benefits of insulation and renewables

April 2008

Home building and Renovating show exhibitor Mark Group is urging householders to warm to the benefits of insulation as around a third of UK homes remain uninsulated.

The Leicester based Mark Group want to see insulation pushed to the forefront of a three pronged approach by householders to help cut carbon emissions from UK homes. With insulation as a " no brainer" - given its near immediate payback for a minimal outlay - Mark Group is calling on self-builders and householders to "go the green mile" by utilising eco-technology such as solar panels and heat pumps and making behavioural changes such as recycling and using building materials from renewable sources , to form an effective home front assault in the battle against climate change.

Mark Group has already taken the lead this winter by offering free loft or wall cavity insulation to anyone in England,Scotland and Wales aged over 70 who owns their own home. The company is now calling on the UK's propertied public to stop lagging behind and insulate before it's too late.

Currently of the 26 million properties in the UK, around nine million homes are without cavity wall insulation and 11 million homes without adequate loft insulation. But if everyone in the UK installed loft insulation up to 270mm thickness, the equivalent savings would pay the energy bills of 640,000 families in the UK and go a long way to arresting the threat of global warming.

Bill Rumble, Commercial Director at Mark Group, said: "It's time we all as householders got more fired up about making our homes more energy efficient. Insulation is a great way to achieve maximum home energy efficiency for a minimal outlay, that continues to make savings long into the future. "We all need to go the green mile on home energy efficiency, taking a whole house approach to reducing the carbon footprint of our homes.

"Investing in the full range of renewables such as solar panels, solar hot water and wind turbines can make a huge difference in cutting your energy bills and making a real statement of intent about the individual householder's desire to tackle climate change."

Mark Group's insulation and renewables call echoes the Government's own efforts to bring insulation to the forefront of the home energy efficiency debate. In last month's budget the new Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT)* regulations announced plans to have 2.9 million homes installed with with cavity wall insulation and 2.7 million homes with loft insulation in the next three years.

  • *The Carbon Emission Reduction Target is an obligation imposed on the gas and electricity transporters and suppliers to ensure that they meet energy efficiency targets by assisting their customers in taking energy efficient measures in their homes.
  • Suppliers must achieve at least half of their energy savings in households on income-related benefits and tax credits.
  • CERT's predecessor, the Energy Efficiency Commitments (EEC) has so far run in two phases with the third phase, now called CERT, set to run from April 2008 to 2011 with the likelihood that current energy efficiency targets will be doubled.
