Lighthouse by Potton - Promoting a Climate for Change
November 2007
For the first time self builders have the opportunity to build a net zero carbon home that can also meet level 6 (the highest level) of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the standard to which all new homes will need to adhere to in 2016. This stunning contemporary house design is based on a simple barn like form derived from a 40 degree roof pitch which can feature an array of photovoltaic panels to generate all the houses' electricity. The sweeping roof envelopes the central space which consists of a generous open plan double height living space and mezzanine study area with cool comfortable sleeping accommodation, bathroom and utility room at ground floor level.
Using a blend of design techniques and integrated systems, the lighthouse by Potton is designed to promote a greener way of living that addresses the practical requirements of homeowners but with a net zero carbon impact on the environment. Next year, Potton will be introducing further designs to the range but at present the package for the two to three bedroom property includes Kingspan TEK Building systems, a high performance SIPS (Structural Insulated Panel) that provides unrivalled levels of thermal insulation and air tightness to minimise heat loss from the property once built.
Solar thermal panels for hot water generation, a biomass boiler for space heating and hot water in winter, grey water recycling, rain water harvesting, whole house mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) and a unique wind catcher at the top of the house, are also available from Potton to ensure that self builders can achieve unrivalled energy efficiencies. In addition, the company can compliment this with advice on the materials required internally and externally to further optimise the house's overall sustainability credentials. These include sweet chestnut cladding, foundations constructed from timber floor cassettes supported off the ground using screw fast pile heads which not only speed up construction but also avoid the need for concrete slabs, and wool and natural rubber floor coverings throughout the interior.
Says Joe Martoccia, Sales and Marketing Director at Potton: "Today home ownership comes with an environmental responsibility. Individually we have a duty to cut our energy consumptions. The new lighthouse by Potton provides self builders with the capability to build a future generation of net zero carbon homes that not only achieve Level 6 in terms of sustainability but also cost just £31 per year to run."
From conception to completion, Potton offer a unique handholding service that starts with consultancy on the design and position of the property on the plot, the specification of materials to achieve the desired levels of energy efficiency, assistance with gaining planning permission, and a UK wide search for tradesmen and subcontractors to build these homes.
